A four-year project to convert Oberlin College’s fossil fuel-based heating and cooling system to a geothermal system is now online.
The Sustainable Infrastructure Program (SIP) project replaced aging infrastructure with a new system powered by 850 geothermal wells on the practice fields north of campus, water-source heat pumps, and an underground network of pipes. Nearly 60 campus buildings have been retrofitted to accommodate the new system. The project also equipped 11 more buildings with air conditioning.
With the completion of the project, Oberlin College is an estimated 90 percent near its goal of being carbon neutral by 2025.
