Lawver and O’Connor Receive 2021 Rex Dillow Award
APPA is pleased to announce that the 2021 recipients of the Rex Dillow Award for Outstanding Article in Facilities Manager are Michigan State University’s Adam S. Lawver and Sean O’Connor. Their article, “Deploying Disruptive Technologies with a Disruptive Approach to Leadership,” was originally published in the July/August 2020 issue of Facilities Manager.
APPA’s Information and Communications Committee, led by Vice President David Handwork of Arkansas State University, made its selection from the seven eligible articles published in the six issues of Facilities Manager within the past year. Since 1987, APPA has presented the annual Rex Dillow Award to the feature article deemed most relevant, readable, and valuable from the previous year’s eligible articles.
Lawver is director of campus services at Michigan State University, and O’Connor is MSU’s retired chief of staff in facilities. They received their award virtually during the 2021 Awards Celebration held during APPA’s Virtual Facilities Summit on July 21.
An excerpt follows: In this sense, “disruption” is not necessarily bad; it can include positive and unprecedented responses to unforeseen circumstances that threaten to undermine business-as-usual. The many articles written about the companies listed above make it clear that at the core of their respective responses has been a commitment to reinvigorate the corporate culture in a way that not only encourages innovation but also—and more importantly— develops leaders who can foster a higher level of trust within the workforce. In addition, their research that resulted in this article, conducted under the auspices of APPA’s Center for Facilities Research, received the CFaR Research Award.
We also extend our congratulations to another set of researchers working within CFaR. Angela Hayslett and Emeka Anaza, instructors at James Madison University, completed their research project this past year and were presented with the CFaR Research Award at the July 21 Awards Celebration. Their research report is Reducing Risk: An Examination of Use and Perceived Effectiveness of Risk Management Strategies at NCAA Collegiate Athletic Facilities.
Congratulations to Adam, Sean, Angela, and Emeka on receiving their hard-earned recognition with the Rex Dillow Award and the CFaR Research Award.
Coming in July/August 2021
