Since 1987, the Rex Dillow Award has been presented annually to the author (or authors) of the best article published in Facilities Manager magazine over the calendar year. This is a prestigious recognition in the facilities management field that honors outstanding contributions to the profession, focusing on articles written by full-time employees from any department of an APPA member institution. The selection process for this award is rigorous, with five key criteria—content, interest, readability, applicability, and ease of editing—as a benchmark for consideration.
The 2024 recipient of the Rex Dillow Award is Jamie K. Gayer, senior human resources director at Indiana University—Bloomington. Her timely and exceptional article, Empowering Tomorrow’s Skilled Trade Professionals: Modernizing Apprenticeship Programs in FM, stands out for its insightful exploration of how apprenticeship programs can evolve to better meet the needs of the facilities management industry. Gayer’s article highlights the importance of adapting apprenticeship structures to provide future professionals with the skills and knowledge needed in a rapidly changing field.
Her work is recognized for its compelling content, which addresses a critical issue in the industry and engages readers with its clear and accessible writing style. Gayer effectively balances practical advice with forward-thinking solutions, making the article both informative and inspiring for facilities managers, educators, and others involved in developing the workforce of tomorrow.
“I am deeply humbled and honored to receive this recognition.” Gayer said, when notified of her selection. “My heartfelt thanks go to the APPA community for your continued support and for providing opportunities to share thoughtful insights on areas of growth and innovation within the facilities management industry. It is truly a privilege to contribute to such meaningful conversation.”
This award celebrates Gayer’s contribution to the field and her ability to articulate important trends that will shape the future of facilities management. As the recipient of the 2024 Rex Dillow Award, Gayer joins a distinguished group of writers who have made lasting impacts on the profession through their insightful contributions to Facilities Manager magazine.
