Over 350 facilities management professionals from across the United States and as far away as Guam came to APPA U in San Antonio, Texas, June 24-27.
The first day of APPA U began with lunch in the Navarro Ballroom at The Westin, Riverwalk. This was followed by the first day of sessions for the Institute for Facilities Management and the bilingual version of Supervisor’s Toolkit, which debuted in May 2023. Networking opportunities were offered in between sessions.
On Tuesday, APPA’s Leadership Academy opened, a professional development program focusing on four leadership skills: individual, interpersonal, managerial, and organizational.
Following breakfast for attendees in the Navarro Ballroom at The Westin, Riverwalk, sessions for the second day of the Institute for Facilities Management and the bilingual Supervisors Toolkit also started. Attendees took advantage of breaks between sessions and at lunch to network. There was also a networking reception at the end of Tuesday’s sessions. A variety of drinks and hors d’oeuvres were available for attendees as they talked with one another in the hallway or the outside balcony on the ballroom level of the Westin.
On Wednesday, sessions for Institute for Facilities Management, Leadership Academy, and the bilingual Supervisors Toolkit continued at APPA U, after breakfast in the Navarro Ballroom at the Westin Riverwalk in San Antonio.
Attendees also had the opportunity to continue networking over lunch and during the break between afternoon sessions. The APPA U conference hotel’s location on the San Antonio River Walk also gave attendees several options for dinner in the evening, as well as shopping and sightseeing opportunities. Trolley tours of downtown San Antonio were available, as were river cruises along the San Antonio River. The historic grounds of The Alamo is also within walking distance of the host hotel.
APPA U came to a close on Thursday, June 27th, as the last round of sessions were held for the Institute for Facilities Management (IFM), Leadership Academy, and the Supervisors Toolkit. Attendees who finished their levels they enrolled in received certificates of completion.
Networking opportunities continued throughout the day—over breakfast, lunch, breaks in between sessions, and the reception before the graduation ceremony.
APPA U attendees who finished all four levels of Leadership Academy (above left) and the four levels of Institute for Facilities Management (above right) received their plaques as graduates of their respective program. Paula Farnsworth, dean of the Leadership Academy, said a few words before the plaques were distributed, as did Lalit Agarwal, associate dean of Energy and Utilities. Graduates from IFM and the Academy received their plaques as Kevin Willmann, communications writer/editor at APPA called the recipients to the stage.
APPA U will return to Texas—on January 6-9, 2025, at the Omni in Fort Worth. Click here to register for January’s APPA U. A virtual offering of Level I of the Leadership Academy will also be offered July 23-25 and September 17-19, 2024. Click here to register for either one of the virtual options.
APPA U traditionally consists of two signature professional development programs—Institute for Facilities Management (IFM) and Leadership Academy. The bilingual version of Supervisor’s Toolkit is an additional program offered as part of this week’s APPA U.
