The future of campus facilities management is both dazzling and daunting. Thanks to rapid advances in artificial intelligence and other technologies, facilities leaders will be able to automate more tasks, achieve greater efficiency, and track, analyze, and leverage data with more speed and power than ever before.
At the same time, they’ll be challenged by factors including integrating these technologies into their existing building stock—and recruiting, training, and retaining the skilled professionals to operate them.
Technology advancements and workforce challenges fueled hours of discussion at APPA’s 2024 Thought Leaders Symposium in February, 2024 when a diversity of leaders in higher education and facilities management met for two days to discuss the higher ed campus of 2023. Attendee Joe Whitefield, assistant vice president of Facilities Services at Middle Tennessee State University, shares some of his takeaways in this video.
