OUR GENERAL SESSIONS
APPA 2015 Opening Keynote Address: Triumph Over Active Shootings - Be Facilities Ready
Over the last 15 years educational settings like Sandy Hook Elementary, Columbine High School, and Virginia Tech University, have become synonymous with the term “active shooter” on campus. APPA is honored to welcome Frank DeAngelis, Principal of Columbine High School (Retired); Kristina Anderson, Virginia Tech Survivor & Founder, The Koshka Foundation for Safe Schools; and Natalie Hammond, Former Lead Teacher of Sandy Hook Elementary School to our annual meeting and community for a first time ever panel discussion where they will share their very personal stories. All too well do we know that an active shooter situation is not just a public safety/security issue, as facilities professionals are asked more and more to interact with responders about buildings, mechanical and locking systems, personnel, and overall building management.

Panelists

Natalie Hammond
Natalie HammondOn December 14, 2012, Natalie Hammond was wounded multiple times in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Natalie Hammond has been an elementary educator for 19 years. She began her career as a classroom teacher. After sixteen years of teaching in third and fifth grade classrooms, she moved to the role of Lead Teacher coaching other teachers and completing building administration duties. In August as she has done throughout the past two years she will be part of the three-person panel to encourage increased communication and positive partnerships” that lend themselves to preparedness and action not only in Public Safety but with Facilities. Natalie now serves as an Assistant Principal in a Connecticut elementary school and works with her 26 Angels Foundation.

Frank DeAngelis
Frank DeAngelisFrank DeAngelis became principal of Columbine High School in the Jefferson County School District in Littleton, Colorado in 1996. Frank was the lead administrator on site on April 20, 1999 when two students entered the high school with weapons; he came in contact with one of the shooters and was able to shepherd students to safety. Frank was looked upon to lead during in the immediate aftermath of the violence that occurred in Columbine. Frank will talk about the importance of being prepared to know your building and understanding the importance of relaying information about systems in your building. He retired in June of 2014 after 35 years at Columbine High School. He is presently serving as a consultant for safety and emergency management for the Jeffco School District and continues to talk with audiences about school security. Frank is actively involved in the Frank DeAngelis Columbine High School Academic Foundation, and serves on the board for the Columbine Permanent Memorial.

Kristina Anderson
Kristina AndersonOur third panelist is Kristina Anderson, a survivor of the 2007 Virginia Tech tragedy. As a sophomore in college at the time, Kristina was shot three times inside Norris 211, one of the most critically affected classrooms. Since then, Kristina has started the Koshka Foundation for Safe Schoools, a nonprofit dedicated to improving campus safety education by incorporating the perspective of survivors and lessons learned from past experiences, to trainings. Speaking to law enforcement, educators, first responders, and the public, the Koshka Foundation shares the importance of personal preparedness, pre-planning for emergencies, and steps to prevent future violence.

Why Future Trends in Higher Education Demand Unlearning Today
In the past 100 years, the world has witnessed a startling amount of change—everything from mass industrialization and globalization to space flight and longer life expectancies. Experts are now predicting society will witness a comparable amount of change within the next two decades. In this fast-paced, informative and entertaining presentation, renowned global futurist Jack Uldrich will provide an insightful overview of how a number of technological trends—information technology, mobile web communications, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), social networking, artificial intelligence, wearable technology, business analytics (“Big Data”), the “Internet of Things” and gaming dynamics—are fueling significant change within the field of higher education. Uldrich will then share a number of “unlearning” strategies higher education professionals and leaders can employ today to not only prepare their institutions, organizations and communities for tomorrow’s change but also seize the opportunity to create a better and brighter future for their students, their institutions and themselves.

Speaker: Jack Uldrich is the author of numerous books in the fields of technology and leadership, including the best-selling, The Next Big is Really Small: How Nanotechnology Will Change the Future of Your Business and the award-winnings book, Jump the Curve: 50 Essential Strategies to Help Companies Deal with Emerging Technologies and Higher Unlearning: 39 Post-Requisite Lessons for Achieving a Successful Future. His most recent book, Foresight 20/20: A Futurist Explores the Trends Transforming Tomorrow was released in 2015.

Programming Block 1:
Recruiting and Retaining Young Professionals
Join us for our breakfast presentation as we discuss the realities of today’s workforce. This joint Senior Facility Officer (SFO) and Emerging Professional (EP) session will dive into the issues of motivating, and mentoring today’s young professionals, and to learn what an SFO can do to improve the career development opportunities of your organization’s emerging professionals. After the presentation, join in group discussions with the EPs to further explore the topic and to share your thoughts with all summit participants.
SPEAKER: Michael Wood, 365 Group

Programming Block 2:
Mentorship, What Does It Mean To You?
In this session EPs will have the chance to participate in the development of a mentorship manifesto. The Emerging Professional Committee will lead the session. They will provide detailed information on the current regional mentorship programs and discuss their personal experiences within those programs. As a group we will work through interactive exercises to develop a definition of mentorship and a description of what a potential APPA wide mentorship program would look like.
SPEAKER: Facilitated by the EP Committee Members

Program Block 3:

Speed Mentoring Session
SFOs and EPs will have the opportunity to speed mentor and reverse mentor each other on a variety of topics in a double “date” situation. You will partner up with another EP attendee and have the opportunity to participate in discussions with SFO pairs on a pre-determined set of industry hot topics and burning questions. After your speed mentoring session ends you will rotate to a new SFO pair. This will provide you with the opportunity to hand pick a mentor and hand over your contact information in hopes of building a productive and long-term professional relationship.
SPEAKER: Facilitated by Mike O'Connor, Appalachian State Univeristy & Lindsay Wagner, EP Chair

Program Block 4:
How Can We Make Facilities Management in Higher Education a Sexy Career Option?
In this section EPs will engage in a discussion regarding recruiting and retaining young professionals into management and trades roles in higher education facilities management. Participants will be asked to share their FM journey and participate in an interactive session led my members of the Emerging Professional Committee in which we will collectively develop strategies to recruit young professionals into the industry.
SPEAKER: Facilitated by the EP Committee Members
