Facilities Management Strategies for Campus Sustainability

The Call to Action
Discuss why sustainability has emerged as the most impactful force driving facilities organizations today and into the near future.  Explore why and how the call to action to respond to global climate change is being embraced by institutions of higher education.
Instructor:Dedee DeLongpre Johnston

Introductions and Current State of Campus Sustainability
Attendees will be introduced and asked to discuss desired learning outcomes for the week.  Participants will be asked to share with other attendees the current state of sustainability at their respective institutions.  The moderators will provide overview information on various organizations and resources available to institutions addressing sustainability.
Instructor:Dedee DeLongpre Johnston

Campus Sustainability
Review the history of the campus sustainability movement and the driving forces behind current sustainability efforts on our campuses.  Discuss the proliferation of sustainability directors/coordinators and the emergence of sustainability offices and campus green initiatives.  Explore various organizational structures for students, faculty and staff and the role of the facilities managers in these structures.  Review the importance of developing, maintaining and following campus sustainability policies and principles and the challenges and push-back often encountered in advancing the sustainability agenda.  Discover the increasing resources available to assist facilities managers with sustainability initiatives through professional organizations (APPA, NACUBO, SCUP and the AASHE).  Discuss how institutions are demonstrating their commitment to sustainability, including evaluating membership in the President’s Climate Commitment, the Chicago Climate Exchange, and institutionally crafted climate commitments.
Instructor:Dedee DeLongpre Johnston

APPA's Thought Leaders Sustainability Report
This session is a review of APPA’s recently published report in their Thought Leaders Series – The Educational Professional's Practical Guide to Reducing the Campus Carbon Footprint.  The report is an implementation guide intended to give educational facilities professionals a practical companion framework for moving forward in their unique role within this process. The intent is to help facilities managers maximize their specific contributions and share their expertise and knowledge while working in tandem with other campus stakeholders to meet their institutions’ goals of carbon neutrality and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Instructor:Steve Kraal

Managing Campus Energy
The energy consumed by higher education institutions represent the most impactful segment related to campus sustainability and carbon reduction efforts.  A well-designed and implemented energy management program can contribute many benefits to the campus mission. This session will explore the possibilities for positive results that are achievable when the various campus motives are understood and serve as the basis for the specific projects and initiatives making up the energy management and conservation program.
Instructor: Joe Whitefield

Measuring Success
Currently there is no standard, comprehensive way to measure sustainability performance of higher education institutions or to benchmark a single institution’s performance over time. This session reviews efforts by AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, in developing metrics that matter through STARS – the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment & Rating System. Participants will hear about efforts to standardize information about what colleges and universities are doing to move toward sustainability and how access to such information can help institutions set meaningful sustainability goals and identify strategies for achieving those goals.
Instructor: Meghan Fay

Sustainability Panel Discussion
As a wrap up to the week-long program, join a panel discussion on issues of interest and concern to attendees related to sustainability.
Instructors: Meghan Fay, Joe Whitefield, Steve Kraal, & Don Guckert
